JORDAN TO SIGN DEAL ON SHALE OIL PLANT
JORDAN

Amman - Jordan and the Estonian company Eesti Energia, a subsidiary of the Jordan Oil Shale Energy Co., are about to enter an agreement for the construction of one of the largest thermoelectric plants in the world using shale oil as fuel. This plant, which is expected to be operational by 2016 and to have power amounting to 700 Mw, will probably be built in the central region of Attarat, an area rich in shale oil. According to rumours, negotiations are ongoing and an agreement should be reached before the end of the year. This project is part of a broader strategy implemented by the Jordanian government, addressed at finding alternatives for the no longer reliable supply of Egyptian gas, on which the country depends for 80% of its electricity. Jordan's objective is to produce enough shale oil to cover 14% of the country's energy mix by the end of the decade.
